Dental Decisions

Going to the dentist for the first time is one of the passages of childhood. Sit in the big chair, open wide, and let someone poke and prod into your mouth. For most kids this is no big deal; for many of those on the spectrum, it is one of the most dreaded experiences of their lives.

Like everything else, dentistry has changed. We know more. Offices are more high tech, x-rays are common, machines make all kinds of noises, and dental materials have all kinds of smells.

Dentistry now offers many more options than simply looking for cavities and filling them. Teeth cleaning can be done in a number of ways, awake or asleep. Fluoride treatments, anyone? How about sealants or whitening? What about damaged, sick, or infected teeth? Fill them? Crown them? Perform a root canal on them? Pull them? Replace them? With what? Silver amalgams? Porcelain? Resin? Gold? And then there is orthodontics. New methods arise monthly for straightening those wayward incisors.
